About Scholarship: The successful candidate will conduct experiments on rice tissue culture and transformation- increasing tissue culturability and transformation efficiency and support the laboratory’s transgenic rice production pipeline for trait development. She/he will assist in molecular analysis and phenotyping of transgenic materials. She/he will also encode and organize data, write reports and present the results in proper fora.

-Produce transgenic lines from various constructs through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation- this covers tissue culture and transformation, planting and harvesting putative transgenic events, harvesting and processing of seeds

-Assist in the phenotyping of transgenic events in the laboratory, contained facility and transgenic screen houses

-Assist in laboratory-based screening and molecular analysis of transgenic plants

-Input and organize data and analyze results from transformation and screening experiments

-Write reports and presents paper/ poster in relevant conferences

-Perform all other related duties that may be assigned from time to time by the supervisors.

About Scholarship: The successful candidate will work in the Genotyping Services Lab (GSL) in the Molecular Marker Applications Lab at IRRI. She/he will process customer samples for rice DNA extraction and SNP marker genotyping with the assistance of a research technician.

-Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required. 

Roles and Responsibilities: -Review customer sample submission forms, assist in the import of DNA samples, review sample entries in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and generate barcodes

-Process incoming DNA samples: assign sample storage location, arrange samples in 96-well format, check DNA quality and concentration and prepare aliquots for genotyping

-When needed, harvest rice leaf tissue samples from the greenhouse or field, perform semi-automated DNA extraction, check DNA quality and concentration and dilute samples

-Process samples through the different SNP marker genotyping protocols, including the BeadXpress Reader for 384-SNP sets and the Fluidigm EP1 system for sets of 24 and 96 SNPs

-Track maintenance schedules for equipment, ensure that the LIMS is updated for the lab supply inventory and sample tracking, analyze SNP data and prepare customer reports and data sets

-Assist in developing training and marketing materials, mentoring others, preparing reports and performing all other related duties that may be assigned from time to time by the supervising IRS.

About Scholarship: The successful candidate will contribute to the development of pre-breeding materials for IRRI’s variety development teams through conventional and marker-assisted recurrent selection. She/he will work on the marker-assisted selection for the development of male sterile version of selected parental lines for population development. This is funded by the STRASA project.

Roles and Responsibilities:

- Conduct association studies and others for the validation of candidate genes identified using different segregating breeding materials, germplasm, and mapping populations using high-throughput genotypic analysis and for selecting lines with high zinc and iron in the rice grain

- Transcript analysis of high iron and zinc lines using gene panels of iron and zinc homeostasis genes

- Work with the Golden Rice (GR) scientists and breeders in the conduct of the molecular analysis of GR materials at IRRI

- Lead the breeding steps for the next generation Golden Rice varietal improvement

- Work with the Genetic Transformation Laboratory (GTL) scientists in (a) the biosafety aspect to conduct the confined field trial (CFT) to evaluate high iron lead events (b) managing seed multiplication and transfer for bioavailability trials, (c) the crossing of lead events to other genetic backgrounds and (d) the transcript analysis using an iron and zinc homeostasis-related gene panel for high iron and zinc lines

- Work with the HarvestPlus (HP) and GR scientists in the conduct of field trials and assist in the production of the data required to secure appropriate release approvals

- Assist in managing and reporting against the HarvestPlus and Golden Rice budgets
