DAAD Masters Scholarships in Public Policy and Good Governance

DAAD ScholarshipsDescription: The Programme offers very good graduates with a first university degree the chance to obtain a Master’s degree in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. The scholarships are awarded for selected Master courses at German institutions of higher education. The successful candidates will study from September/October 2015 on one of the selected Master courses listed below.

Participating Programmes in Host Institutions: The following Master courses can be undertaken at selected German Universities as specified below:

  • • University of Duisburg-Essen: MA Development and Governance
  • • Willy Brandt School of Public Policy at the University of Erfurt: Master of Public Policy (MPP)
  • • Leuphana University of Lüneburg: Public Economics, Law and Politics (PELP)
  • • Hochschule Osnabrück: Management in Non-Profit Organisations
  • • University of Osnabrück: Master of Democratic Governance and Civil Society
  • • University of Passau: Master of Governance and Public Policy
  • • University of Potsdam: Master of Public Management (MPM)

The courses have an international orientation and are taught in German and/or English.

Target Group: The scholarship scheme is open to candidates from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia as well as from countries in the Middle East. See list of eligible countries.

Scholarship Value/inclusions: DAAD scholarship holders are exempt from tuition fees. DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 €. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and/or family allowances.

Eligibility: The scholarship targets very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who in the future want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals.

The main DAAD criteria for selection are: the study results, knowledge of English (and German), political and social engagement, a convincing description of the subject-related and personal motivation for the study project in Germany and the expected benefit after the return to the home country.

The university degree should have been obtained during the six years before the application for the scholarship. Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than 15 months at the time of application.

All Master courses have further additional requirements that must be fulfilled by the applicants at any case.

Application Instructions: Please submit your applications for the Master courses and for the DAAD Scholarship solely to the Master courses you have selected at the respective university (not to DAAD). Please fill in the DAAD application form by indicating your desired priority of study courses. Deadline varies but is around July to August 2014 depending on the course; please check the deadlines on the homepages of the selected Master courses.

DAAD Postgraduate Scholarships for Developing Countries

Scholarship Description: The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports a range of postgraduate courses at German Universities which aim at providing academically educated young professionals from developing countries with further specialized studies.

These degree courses, which consist of one to two years of concentrated study, provide academically-trained young professionals in leading positions from developing countries with the opportunity to engage in postgraduate education and training in their particular field or profession.

Eligibility: You should note that several conditions apply. However, the typical scholarship holder:

  • Will come either from a public authority or a state or private company in a developing country and, as such, be engaged in the planning and execution of directives and projects with emphasis on development policies having a bearing on technological, economic or social areas
  • Holds a bachelor’s degree (four years) in related subject
  • Will have completed an academic degree with grades far beyond average and at least two years of related professional experience
  • Is not older than 36 years (for some courses the age limit is 32), respectively his/her academic degrees should normally not be older than six years. Concerning a possible age limit, please refer to the course details on the official website

Please note that For courses in English: IELTS (band 6) certificate or TOEFL (minimum score: 550 paper based, 213 computer based, 80 internet based) is required.

Scholarship benefits: DAAD Scholarship supports selected programmes with a variety of full or partial scholarships.

Methods of Application: If you have no private financial resources or cannot obtain a scholarship from your government, company or an international organisation, you may apply for a DAAD scholarship – either full or partial. DAAD application forms are available from the German embassies or from the DAAD offices abroad or directly at the University or Fachhochschule.

All applicants must submit the complete set of required documents (as stated on this page) including the DAAD application form (*.pdf) and a hand-signed CV before the deadlines. Some courses may require additional documents. For such courses, the applicant needs to follow separate specific application requirements and instructions (if any).

DEADLINES: 31st of July at the German embassies or at the DAAD regional offices (Please ask for possible modifications in your home country!) PLEASE NOTE (IMPORTANT): Applications from CameroonMyanmar and Nigeria must be submitted via the German embassy. Applicants from the People’s Republic of China are required to enclose two self-adressed address labels written in Chinese characters with their application documents.

Scholarships cannot be awarded without the official DAAD application form. Many courses, however, have their own forms, which must be submitted in addition to this (see details under course description in the ‘Resource Booklet’ – link to it is below).

Applicants are requested to state whether they will be financing the desired degree course themselves or whether the course can only be taken with the assistance of a DAAD scholarship. Chances of admission to postgraduate courses will be greatly enhanced for academically qualified applicants with personal financial resources.

DAAD Scholarship for Fine Arts, Architecture, Music, Dance

DAAD Scholarship for Fine Arts, Architecture, Music, DanceDAAD (Deutscher Academischer Austausch Dients) offer scholarship in the fields of fine art, design, film, music, choreography and architecture. Students who have qualified will get an opportunity to obtain a program of additional studies, with or without earning a formal degree, at a German institute of higher education.

Country of Applicants : US or Canadian citizens. Foreign nationals must have studied at an accredited US or Canadian university for at least two years by the time of application.

Level/Degree : Postgraduate (master/PhD)

Eligibility & Condition:

  • Graduating seniors or graduate students applying for this program must be enrolled at an accredited university at the time of application.(Those who have already completed an undergraduate degree do not need to be currently enrolled.)
  • Recent graduates who have completed their Bachelor’s degrees no longer than six years before the application deadline are welcome to apply.
  • PhD candidates must have achieved ABD status no longer than four years before applying. Postdocs may apply until two years after completion of their PhD.
  • Applicants should be US or Canadian citizens. Foreign nationals must have studied at an accredited US or Canadian university for at least two years by the time of application.
  • At the time of application, Applicants must not have been resident in Germany for more than one year.
  • Applicants are requested to have a well-defined study project that makes a stay in Germany essential. Preference will be given to applicants who have been invited by a faculty member at a German university to study at a particular university department.
  • Applicants in the arts, humanities and social sciences should have a good command of German.
  • Applicants may not hold a DAAD grant and a grant from another German or German-American organization/German-Canadian organization concurrently for the same project. Prior recipients of a DAAD grant should contact DAAD New York before applying to determine their eligibility status.
